WHY STUDY IN USA

TYPES OF UNIVERSITIES

TYPES OF DEGREES

TYPES OF DEGREES:

Bachelor’s Degree in USA:
A bachelor’s degree is the traditional degree given by American undergraduate colleges
& universities. It normally requires at least four years of full-time college-level coursework.
The two most common classes of bachelor’s degrees awarded by American colleges are
B.S (Bachelor of Science) and B.A (Bachelor of Arts). All students pursuing a bachelor’s
degree must select a major, usually by the end of their second year.

Masters Degree in USA:
For an undergraduate student with a Bachelor’s Degree, it is usually necessary to pursue
an advanced degree, such as a US master’s degree or US doctorate (also knows as PhD)
degree, to advance your career. In addition, some disciplines are taught only at the
Master’s-level in the USA, such as law, medicine, and dentistry. The US master’s degree
usually requires two years of full-time graduate school coursework to complete.
Students in a master’s degree program will complete courses that are highly focused in
their field of study (their major). For some programs, the Masters Degree may have an
option of thesis or non-thesis track.

Doctoral or PhD Degree in USA:
The PhD or Doctoral Degree is even more focused and specialized than the master’s
degree. Some students will complete a master’s degree before applying to a doctorate
degree program, but that is not always necessary. Completion of a US doctorate degree
typically takes between three and six years. The length of time will depend on the
student’s educational background (a student with a master’s degree may take less time
to complete his PhD if it is in the same field), the field of study selected, the student’s
dedication and ability, and the complexity of the thesis the student has chosen for his PhD.

Associate Degrees in USA:
American Associate Degree is a 2-year degree which could be of two types: Associate of
Arts Degree (also called the A.A.) and Associate of Applied Science Degree
(also called the A.A.S.). Community colleges in USA offer Associate Degree programs.
They are operated by the local government. This degree is meant for those students
who do not want to pursue a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in USA but want to attend a US
community college and earn an AA/AAS degree or by students who want to pursue a
bachelor’s degree in USA but they first want to complete the 2 years of college with an
associate degree at a US community college and then transfer to a 4-year US college for
the last/remaining 2 years.
